Ongame Networks unfair Rakeback Policy

Tuesday, August 26th, 2008

The poker network Ongame Network use the selling point “Rakeback free enviroment“as an important argument towards new poker operators to choose Ongame Network as a supplier of their poker software. Ongame Network has over the last year enforced harsh punishments for poker rooms in their network that do not obey by their rakeback-rules and continue to offer rakeback deals directly to players or through affiliates. We believe that rakeback can be both good and bad for a poker room or network. One of the primary reasons used for implementing a “no rakeback policy” is because rakeback has a tendency to move players within a network from the poker rooms that do a lot of advertising to the ones offering the best rakeback-deals. Rakeback-rooms steal high-value players from the poker rooms that actually get new players to the network. Getting new players to a poker network is very important to keep a good liquidity of players and ultimately the survival of the poker network. In most networks it is the bigger poker rooms that do all the advertising and some smaller ones that offer rakeback. The situation in Ongame Network is funnily the opposite.Despite Ongame Network’s “no rakeback policy”, Betsson (one of the biggest poker rooms in the Ongame Network) are continuing to offer rakeback through several of their affiliates. Even though Ongame are strict with the other poker rooms, Betsson is for some reason allowed to roam free as the single poker room offering Rakeback in the network.  (more…)

The Cannibal Poker Rooms

Sunday, August 24th, 2008

In every network there is at least one Cannibal Poker Room. It sounds scary, and that’s what it is. It’s the poker room in the network that does not market their room to players in general but to players in the other sites in the network. By targeting high rollers on the other sites in the network they manage to get players that will spend a lot of money without spending lots in marketing themselves.

Poker rooms feeding on each others

As players tend to fell better about moving within the network than moving to a completely new one this is a stratey that works, and it works cheaply. The most common way of doing this is offering rakeback or really big bonuses for high rollers. If you compare this to advertising in TV and Magazines it becomes obvious. A magazine ad will bring a lot of new players to your room. Most of them are not very good players but a few of them will become good players in the future. A good player is much more profitable than a bad player so you can see the ad as a long term investment. You attract the players by paying a lot of money in advertising and hope that they will stay at your poker room long enough to become profitable.

If a site in te network starts offering rakeback and the word spreads what will happen is that players, when they reach a certain skill level, will find out. For the good amateurs Rakeback is the supreme bonus and moving to a poker room that offers rakeback will increase their profit a lot. This means that when players reach a certain level of skill they will move to the smaller room that offers rakeback. The big rooms doing a lot of advertising will attract the players to the network and then lose them as they start being profitable. The players have been cannibalized.

Rakeback is even nastier than this because it removes profit in general from the poker network. If you calculate the total revenue of the whole network (all rooms in the network) it is; The Rake - The percentage you pay to the network - The bonuses. Ok it’s rough but we don’t need anything more accurate. By offering Rakeback the Bonus part increases greatly without actually increasing the rake, it’s still the same players that play in the network as rakeback only rarely attract players from other networks. The Cannibal site destroyes a lot of the possible profit in the market to make a much smaller profit themselves.

What does this do for the players then? At the first look it seems as the winners in all this are the players. Well, to start with of course, it decreases the cost to play but in long term the bigger poker rooms that do the advertising actually need to make more money to stay profitable. The result of this can only be high rake. Rakeback increases the rake, maybe not for the players that have it but for players in general.

What is Redirector3 Valueactive?

Wednesday, August 6th, 2008

One of our readers asked us about Redirector3.Valueactive.com. You can find it in your browser history and similar. It’s easy to think it’s some sort of spyware or virus but the answer is simpler than that. If you have redirector3.valueactive.com in your history you are a poker player in the microgaming network. This redirector is the cashier in the microgaming network, if you have been winning or depositing money you will see it.

Total traffic on all poker sites

Tuesday, July 8th, 2008

You are of course interested in knowing how much traffic the poker rooms have on their sites. We have compiled a list with a little help from Google Trends who derive information from, among other sources, Google Analytics. There are a few flaws in the data, one is that sub-domains are not counted, sites that are split up in sub-domains as Bwin shows less traffic than they actually have. The data is in no way 100% but this is the best data available for all of us that don’t work in the poker rooms themselves. We have tested the tool a lot and the data seems pretty sound for a tool like this.

Please note that this is the data for the traffic on the site itself, the client is not included. Pokerstars for example doesn’t look so big but they are.

    Poker bonuses

    Monday, July 7th, 2008

The bonuses in poker online can vary a lot from site to site. How big the bonuses are an a certain site is usually a sign of how valuable the poker room consider their bonus players. Of course, the amount of profit they want to make on the player is also a factor, a fresh poker room might want to get attention by offering bigger bonuses than they actually can afford in the long run.

Two poker rooms that have profiled themselves as big bonus rooms are PokerLoco and Hollywood, both offering massive amounts in bonus to their bonusplayers. Hollywood with bonuses on several hundred percent and PokerLoco with a thousand percent bonus.

There is no doubt that you can make a lot of money playing for poker bonuses but you have to go about it the right way. The usual way is of course to keep playing a lot at a poker room with big repetitive bonuses but the ones that really benefit from the bonus system are the guys that go through all the rooms. By getting the maximimum first deposit bonuses on all the poker rooms and playing really tight until they have raked enough they are able to cash out the maximal bonuses from all the poker rooms. This is a sort of parasitic approach to the bonus system and it has made a lot of poker rooms change their systems a bit. Bonuses used to be paid even without any deposit earlier, they used to be paid out with less rake and a lot of people took advantage of this.

There is still a possibility to do the bonus thing and race through all the poker rooms hoarding bonuses and player points. It’s not as it used to be a couple of years ago but you can still make a decent living from it if you’re a student or if you just have nothing to do at night.

What to do if I win WSOP?

    Thursday, July 3rd, 2008

I am thinking of playing the WSOP this year. Last year Jerry Yang from California took home a staggering $ 8,250,000 with his win. I have already started to think about what I would do with kind of money.

    On my list so far:

Quite my day job right away. No reason to stress to work everyday if I have millions on the bank.
Minimize my poker game (I do not want to loose all that monet right away)
    Pay of all my debts
A new car, probably a Porsche (always wanted one)
A Panerai Watch, probably a Panerai Radiomir Chrono Rattrapante
    A trip around the world
A summer house in south Europe (probably Spain or Italy)
Last but not least, something for my girlfriend

The rest of the money I will hopefully invest wisely.

Have I forgotten anything important on my list?

There is no such thing as free poker

    Wednesday, May 28th, 2008

Poker rooms make money from their players, that’s the whole business plan. They take a small slice of each pot and they do it all the time. To attract poker players they all use different tricks. Full Tilt tries to attract people with their large amount of famous pros, Pokerstars and Party floods us with commercials and Pokerloco has insanely big bonuses.

    Poker money

A lot of poker rooms have big freerolls, saying that by playing there you have a chance to win money even if you don’t bet. They call it free poker. There is only one catch, there is no such thing as free poker. Do you really think that the poker rooms will give you money for nothing?

Of course you pay in some way. There are lots of ways to make money from non-paying players and the poker rooms use them all to make sure they make a big profit. The first and most obvious thing is that you get used to playing on their site. If you are used to it there is a bigger chance that you will cash up in the future. Another thing is that you are actually a market share, by grabbing hold of you they make sure no one else does. The shadier rooms might even sell your contact information to another poker room, since you have signed up for playing poker the buyer at least knows that you are interested in playing. There is no question that the poker room will make money from your “Free poker game” no matter what you think.

How to Succeed as a Poker Affiliate

    Sunday, April 20th, 2008

Lots and lots of people dream of a passive income. Making money by showing ads online can be a very good way to do that. Running a poker site is somewhere in between a passive income and really hard work. If you succeed you can make big bucks without working hard but it can be a lot of work to actually get there. We want to give you a few pointers in how to succeed as a Poker Affiliate.

     Forget about it

To start with you need to forget the idea of a passive income, save that for later. When you start out you need to work hard, really hard. There are thousands of sites telling people everything they need to know about poker, there are thousands of forums and blogs dedicated to poker. If you want your site to take off you are going to need to spend lots and lots of hours writing good content and promoting your site.

Getting started – setting up a poker site

First of all, you need a site. There are a few affiliates that make it without sites but you can count them on your indexfinger. You need to build a good site, with real quality content. The usual stuff about how you play Texas Hold’em just won’t do. You need a way to attract visitors, you need to offer something. There are lots of things you need to think about when you start a poker site and we’ll look in to a few of them.

You need to decide if you want to target the US market. This decision is not as easy as it looks. The US market is the biggest market for online poker and if you manage to hit it off there you’re made of money but there are two problems. The competition is killing, it’s extremely hard to launch a poker site targeting US or in English in general. The other problem is that Online Poker is banned in the US. Most poker rooms don’t accept players from the US so affiliate deals might be a bit scarce. There is always the off-chance that if you go to the US they’ll want to arrest you if you promote online poker.

Another thing to think about is whether you want to offer rakeback or not. Rakeback is a good way to attract the really good players and with revenue share and good players you can make a lot of money. The problem with rakeback is that most networks has put a stop to rakeback. The reason is that it’s not really profitable for the poker rooms to hand out rakeback.

Next step - Promoting your site

There are of course a lot of ways to promote a site, no matter if it’s a poker site or any generic site. Search engines are usually a good way to start promoting but when it comes to poker sites you are somewhat limited. Google for example does not accept advertising for poker sites. You just can’t get those adwords if you deal in poker. You can of course turn your face to SEO to hit it in the organic results but lots and lots of good search engine optimizers work with poker sites, the competition is massive. Ordinary banner ads can be a start but in the long run it’s very hard to get profit from buying traffic like that and try to sell it to a poker room in the other end. The advise here is to get creative, do whatever is necessary to get people to start noticing your site. You can start competitions, arrange live tournaments or you can try to convince your buddies to walk around in your branded t-shirts.

One of the best ways to attract visitors is to offer something someone else offers. Give everyone that signs up on one of your poker deals a free pizza or visit every one of them. You can even try and give your visitors an experience they didn’t expect, try setting the world record in most burgers eaten during a single poker tournament. The key here is to get creative.

It takes time to attract visitors. If you don’t hit it off in the first 6 months you need to give it 6 or 12 more. Keep up your advertising, force your friends to keep the t-shirts on for at least 6 months before you decide it didn’t work. As they say advertising is 10% creativity and 90% sweat.

Making money – Get good deals

You have probably seen most of the offers the poker rooms give to future affiliates, you’ve been checking out the deals and think they look pretty slick. $60 for a player signing up and depositing looks good but it’s not. Don’t fall for the standard deals the poker rooms offer to anyone. Talk to their affiliate manager and get a better deal. There is quite a lot of room for improvement on a $60 deal, I’d even stretch and say that if you sign up for that one they are making a fool out of you. I wouldn’t send a player anywhere for less than $140 and that’s when I’m feeling really nice.

One way of forcing the affiliate managers to give you that extra cash is to make them come to you. I they find you in Google they’ll be prepared to give you more money than if you mail them and tell them you want a deal. See if you can get a few articles hitting the search results on a few of the less competitive keywords and then just sit back and wait for them to send mails and ask you if they can give you free money.

     Revenue share or CPA

Most of the poker rooms offer revenue share or CPA. This is no easy decision. CPA will give you the money as soon as the player deposits. Revenue share will give you a percentage of all the profits from the player in the future. If you have really good players, revenue share is the key but if you have average or bad players; go with CPA. If you don’t know if you have good players you usually don’t, go with CPA.

That’s all for now, hope you enjoyed the guide and I wish you good luck with your future affiliate business.

Poker Strategy that works for idiots

    Sunday, April 20th, 2008

Are you a rotten player? Don’t ever manage to win a tournament? Played all the freerolls and every sit and go and still not a single victory? We’ve got a strategy for you.

Finding a good poker strategy is hard work and takes long time. You need to get yourself tuned with the game and adapt the strategies you read about to your own personal way. Copying good players might be a good way, but it will take a lot of time. You need to get their strategy to match your style to get it to work, and you need to play lots and lots of hands.

We’ve got a strategy that works with brute force instead of skill, you hardly need any practice and it’s actually decent. It’s not a good strategy but it can be good enough, at the beginner tables at least. It’s actually a strategy from a very crude No Limit Texas Hold’em Bot. It was never a very good bot but it didn’t loose too much money, meaning that it could play for the first deposit bonuses. How did it work then?

It’s pretty easy but works only sit and go’s, maybe in freerolls as well as you don’t have anything to lose. The important thing here is that it works worse the bigger the tournament. Another important thing is that if you happen to run in to a good or at least above average player, it’s not the best of poker strategies. Play on the small buy in sit and go’s on a poker site with lots of fish. As soon as you get a decent hand, go All in. Keep it up, every time you get a decent hand, go All in. Don’t stop and try to play smart, just go All in, every time a hand shows up. You’ll look like a moron, people will say you you play like an idiot and that you don’t have any skills. They’ll tell you that you just got lucky every time you win a hand. All those are true, you are playing like a moron and you get lucky every time you win a hand.

This is actually a decent strategy because you force the play. You make it more about luck than about skill because there is no way to kick you out of the hand by raising. There is no way to bluff because if you have a good hand you’ll go all in, no matter the pot or the previous bets. There is no way for the limpers to see a flop because they need a hand they are prepared to go all in with f they are playing against you. You are playing like a moron but like a very calculated moron. True, this strategy will not win every sit and go for you but tell me the poker players that win every sit and go. It should win more like every fourth or every third if you are a bit lucky, it’s actually a working sit and go strategy.

What starting hands should you play then? You should play all pairs that are at least better than sevens. You should play Ace with almost any kicker. You should play Jack-Ten and better. You can of course play this a bit tighter but this should be a valid poker strategy for idiots. Give it a try.
